Factors To Consider When Choosing The Most Suitable Pair of Gloves

  • Glove Thickness

Glove thickness, measured in mils, is the first and most important factor that should be considered. The glove thickness ranges from 2 to 15 mils. The thicker the gloves are, the better protection they will provide. However, it will lower the touch sensitivity and make it challenging to work. Reusable gloves are thicker and thus offer better protection. 

  • Tensile Strength

Tensile strength is the amount of force required to break the glove. It is measured in megapascals. The lower the tensile strength is, the higher the possibility of tearing will be. Most medical gloves have a minimum of 11 mPa of tensile strength. 

  • Elongation

Elongation is the glove’s ability to stretch without tearing. Medical gloves need to have an elongation of 300% at least.

  • Chemical Resistance

Chemical resistance is another important factor that should be considered when choosing gloves, as one of their primary purposes is to protect against chemicals. The chemical resistance provided by them depends on the type of chemical it is exposed to. 

  • Length

The length of the gloves is measured from the wrist opening to the fingertips. Long gloves are mostly recommended for people working in the chemical industry, where they have to submerge their hands in the chemical solution.

  • Powder vs Powder-Free Gloves

There are two types of gloves available on the market: powdered and powder-free. Powder gloves are more popular as they are easy to wear and provide better resistance than powder-free gloves. However, these gloves are messy and increase the chances of spreading the pathogens. 

On the other hand, powder-free gloves use polymer coating or chlorination. The ones with chlorination are washed in hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid solutions or chlorine gas and then rinsed. Chlorinated gloves are easier to wear than polymer ones.

  • Shelf Life

Each glove offered has its own shelf life. However, it also depends on where and how it is stored. If you want to get the most out of the gloves, store them in a cool, dark area. If the gloves are stored improperly, their performance reduces.
